From 27 September to 3 October, the IME - Metallurgische Prozesstechnik und Metallrecycling<\/a> team travelled through southern Germany and Austria for a week of learning, discussion and first-hand insights into industrial metallurgy. Our group brought together students, scientific staff and colleagues from across the institute.<\/p>\n Our programme began at Plansee<\/a> in Reutte, Austria, where we learned about the production and recycling of tungsten and molybdenum, metals that are essential for demanding applications. We then visited Montanwerke Brixlegg AG<\/a>, Austria\u2019s only copper smelter, which has operated entirely on secondary raw materials since 1977. The visits offered a striking view of the breadth of modern metallurgy: from recycling and refining to advanced materials and the transformation of primary production. These themes connect closely with the IME\u2019s work in process metallurgy, metal recycling and circular economy research.
\nAt Speira<\/a> Recycling Services in T\u00f6ging am Inn, we explored aluminium and magnesium recycling. Our next stop, AMAG Austria Metall<\/a> AG in Ranshofen, offered insights into how aluminium scrap is returned to the value chain and how casting, forging and rolling operations turn metal into high-quality products.
\nIn Linz, voestalpine<\/a> gave us a closer look at steel production and the company\u2019s transition toward lower-emission processes. The excursion concluded at GfE Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Elektrometallurgie in Nuremberg, where we learned about high-performance metals and materials, including titanium and vanadium, as well as the recovery of vanadium from residues.<\/p>\n
