What does the future of metallurgy look like?

At RWTH Aachen, the Institute for Process Metallurgy and Metal Recycling (IME) is taking an important step forward by reuniting two metallurgical chairs after more than 125 years of separation. Historically, metallurgy in Aachen was divided between iron and steel on one side and non-ferrous metals on the other.

Today, however, the challenges facing industry; from copper and aluminum to battery metals and rare earth elements, require a much more integrated approach. The renewed structure of IME reflects this shift. By bringing together expertise across all metal systems and focusing on process metallurgy, recycling, and circular economy strategies, the institute aims to develop the methods needed for the next generation of sustainable metal production. A strong signal for the future of metallurgical research, education, and industry collaboration.
