Description

InGaGe – Semiconductor Raw Materials from European Secondary Resources

The EU project InGaGe develops sustainable recycling and refining technologies for critical semiconductor raw materials, including indium, gallium, germanium, antimony and arsenic. By recovering these elements from European secondary resources such as metallurgical by-products, industrial residues, WEEE and end-of-life materials, the project aims to strengthen the resilience and circularity of the European semiconductor value chain.

At IME, RWTH Aachen University, the work focuses on process development for the recovery and purification of indium and germanium. IME investigates the concentration of indium from a multi-metal alloy by drossing, develops electrometallurgical refining routes for high-purity indium, and contributes to the hydrometallurgical recovery of germanium from Ge-containing optical fibres and LED assemblies. Through these activities, IME supports the development of circular process routes for supplying semiconductor-relevant raw materials from European secondary sources.
