Description

In pyrometallurgical recycling, refractory materials are essential for the lining of the respective melting furnace in order to ensure safe operation and a long service life. To ensure this in the field of lithium-ion battery recycling, this collaborative project between RWTH-IME and RWTH-GHI focuses on the investigation and development of the liquid mineral phases produced during recycling, as well as potential suitable refractory materials for lithium-ion battery recycling. The focus of this project is on gaining a fundamental understanding of the interaction mechanisms between the required refractory materials and the mineral phases produced during the recycling of end-of-life batteries. In doing so, valuable insights into the interactions between mineral phases and refractory materials will be gained, and existing challenges identified. Of particular importance here are the elements lithium and fluorine, which are especially critical for the refractory materials. Analytical methods for composition, phase and microstructure analysis are used to investigate these relationships. Based on the findings, a model is being developed to describe the corrosion of refractory materials during the recycling of lithium-ion batteries.
